Happy Birthday to Me!

Today I noticed that all the hymn numbers were right justified at the front of the chapel. This happens sometimes. I think the organist does it. I always center them when I do it, but I kind of like mixing it up with right justification.

Sacrament meeting was talks by a retired couple departing on their mission. The wife told of some experiences where she had decided scripture verses were telling her how to handle the sale of their house. I can't say she's wrong, but I also wouldn't recommend coincidences in the Come, Follow Me curriculum with incidents in your life as a guide for personal financial decision-making. I had a feeling of magical thinking.

The real fun came in Sunday school. The teacher had a verse from Matthew 19 written on the board to ponder during the lesson. "That's a nice idea," says my friend. Then we read the verse and she changed her mind. We had this interesting and odd lesson about vinculum (literally, "chain," but also a mathematical symbol used for grouping in the order of operations prior to parentheses). There was vinculum deorum and vinculum matrimonii. Interesting, but not terribly useful for living the Gospel of Jesus Christ better. It just surprised me that someone would decide this was the most important thing for our ward to discuss from this week's material. I described it as a "bold and ignorant choice." Also, my former spouse made multiple comments about there not being civil marriage in Israel to this day. And it was all fine. I sat there unstitching the bottom half of R.B.G.'s face because I had made an error in the pattern, and kept my comments to myself.

Noah and Anna came over this afternoon. We ate the last three slices of my birthday pie that Anna had made for me on Friday. We played three rounds of Bananagrams. When I got it out, Noah looked at Anna and said, "I told you so." I try not to disappoint. Then I busted out my Eric Dowdle Paris puzzle and we got at least a third of it put together.

I had many well wishes from friends and family. I'm grateful for the small army of people at my back.

At some point maybe I will write about chocolate, sharing, and a sense of autonomy, but not tonight.
