Sunday School

I think my water heater is out. It’s 9:38 p.m. and I just remembered that I had cold, quick shower this morning. I got distracted this afternoon because I found a dress pattern that my daughter had cut out more than a year ago and never sewed together. I decided to sew it for her for her birthday, on Thursday. It may not fit. It will most definitely be fairly short. We may need to add a strip of solid fabric to the skirt at some point, but it’s done. I finished it. I am thankful her sister spent the whole afternoon with me cheering me on and keeping me company and giving me zipper courage.

Sacrament meeting was pretty good. I cross-stitched on RBG’s face, just in case something came up, but nothing did. Fast and testimony meetings have taken an interesting turn with the shorter format. Four of the five so far have had more testimonies by women than by men. We are currently at 44/56 YTD male/female. We have yet to cross the 60% line for women that has historically been more common for the men. I shared a testimony and pretty much forgot that Ben was in the room.

I went to Sunday school. I sat between Steve and Roxanne, some friends. There were friends dispersed throughout the room and I felt grateful for each of them. The teacher invited comments effectively. It’s a packed room, and it feels like the comments are more one-offs with commentary by the teacher than actual discussions, but it’s a big improvement on other classroom experiences I have had at church. It’s both more interesting and more effective. “What did you learn during your gospel study during the week?” We still had to race through a certain amount of the teacher’s agenda for the last ten minutes, but most of the meeting was quite good. And as far as I could tell, Ben wasn’t in the room, so I didn’t have to manage any thoughts around that.

There was a weird interlude where the teacher asked us to call out attributes of Christ while he wrote them on the board in undefined categories. Powerful and strong were both on one list with only three words. The rest ended up on the other side with charity, empathy, compassion, meekness, etc. It turned out that his categories were gender. He called it a thought experiment, but it only represented his thoughts, not anyone else’s. It just wasn’t in any way useful, unless it helps you identify your socialization so you can be more intentional about what qualities to develop. Really, though, the call to each of us is to become more Christlike, not just men and not just women. All of us, all the characteristics.

And now I must go to bed. I have already made multiple poor sleep choices this weekend. It’s nice to be home, though.
